Slow relative motion of IRAS galaxies at small separations: implications for galaxy formation models

چکیده
We report on the measurement of the two-point correlation function and the pairwise peculiar velocity of galaxies in the IRAS PSCz survey. The real space two-point correlation function can be fitted to a power law ξ(r) = (r0/r) γ with γ = 1.69 and r0 = 3.70h Mpc. The pairwise peculiar velocity dispersion σ12(rp) is close to 400 km s −1 at rp = 3h Mpc and decreases to about 150 km s at rp ≈ 0.2h Mpc. These values are significantly lower than those obtained from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey, but agree very well with the results of blue galaxies reported by the SDSS team later on. We have constructed mock samples from N-body simulations with a cluster-weighted bias and from the theoretically constructed GIF catalog. We find that the two-point correlation function of the mock galaxies can be brought into agreemnt with the observed result, but the model does not reduce the velocity dispersions of galaxies to the level measured in the PSCz data. Thus we conclude that the peculiar velocity dispersions of the PSCz galaxies require a biasing model which substantially reduces the peculiar velocity dispersion on small scales relative to their spatial clustering. The results imply that either the cosmogony model needs to be revised or the velocity bias is important for the velocity dispersion of the IRAS galaxies.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملAn IRAS High Resolution Image Restoration (HIRES) Atlas of All Interacting Galaxies in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample
The importance of far-infrared observations in our understanding of extreme activity in interacting and merging galaxies has been illustrated by many studies. Even though two decades have passed since its launch, the most complete all-sky survey to date from which far-infrared selected galaxy samples can be chosen is still that of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). However, the spatial...
متن کاملThe HI Companions of HII Galaxies and Low Surface Brightness Dwarf Galaxies
I study the VLA HI survey of HII galaxies by Taylor et al. (1995, ApJS, 99, 427; 1996, ApJS, 102, 189) and the VLA HI survey of low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxies by Taylor et al. (1996, in press) to investigate the role of galaxy interactions in triggering the bursts of massive star formation seen in HII galaxies. Comparing the two surveys, I find that HII galaxies have companions mor...
متن کاملAge-dating Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies along the Merger Sequence
Imaging spectroscopy using the new Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph is presented for the Paα line in four ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The resulting integral field datacubes reveal line emission possessing a wide range of complex spatial morphologies, often quite different from the appearance of the continuum. The velocity fields are equally diverse in nature, often failing to resemble t...
متن کاملColour dependence of the distribution of IRAS galaxies revealed by multifractal measures
Multifractal measures are applied to three IRAS galaxy subsamples selected by colour from the PSCz catalogue. As shown by a generalised dimension spectrum, hot IRAS galaxies are found to be less clustered than cold galaxies, but the difference is very small. An alternative tool, the conditional multifractal dimension spectrum reveals an apparent peculiarity of the distribution of hot galaxies, ...
